I’ve been bothered with this issue for several times. I can’t shut down my Mac because of Mail, an app I use daily.
- Chrome Won't Shut Down Mac
- Library Won't Shut Down On Mac Computer
- Library Won't Shut Down On Mac Air
- My Computer Won T Shut Down
It seems Mail won’t quit and it shows me this error message:
I remember I quit the Apple Mail app, but somehow it just failed…weird! How do you merge two iphoto libraries.
How to fix: Create a backup of your entire music library. Move your music out of the music folder. Go to /Library and remove every file related to 'Music' and 'iTunes.' Delete music caches in /Library/Caches. Restart your Mac and try to access the library again. It should be working now. Jan 29, 2018 a. Use the shortcut command Command+Option+Escape to force quit all the affected apps and then shut down your Mac. Open Activity Monitor to kill all affected apps’ processes and then shut down your Mac. If you can shut down your Mac and then restart your Mac, I’d like you to confirm and provide the following. Jun 11, 2016 Hi, I'm having problem in shutting down my Mac Mini. I have a Os X El Capitan 10.11.4, processor 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5, memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3. When I try shutting down the computer, it just stays on but the Finder stop responding. I try relaunching it but it keeps off. I can open any application, go online, anything but access the Finder. Mar 10, 2018 Since upgrading to Mac OS X 10.9 I’ve experienced the problem other people have reported, where their Mac won’t shutdown, or shuts down very slowly. We had a huge lightning storm roll in a few days ago, and when my 2008 iMac didn’t shut down after three minutes of waiting, I finally had to press and hold the button on the back to force it.
After attempting to research the reasons why, I also bumped into a few forum discussions where other Mac users were also experiencing the same issue.
And to my surprise, we can’t figure out the exact reasons. Some say it’s related to the OS X (now macOS) your Mac is running under, while there are also people say it’s due to the Mail app itself — meaning it’s a bug that needs to be fixed.
Personally, I feel the later sounds more reasonable. Because I’ve encountered a few other issues related to Mail, such as the app takes longer to receive and send out new mails. Especially when I send an email, sometimes it just freezes on the “sending” process, I often have to double check the sendbox to make sure my email reply is delivered successfully. Apple already knows this issue as you can see from this support article.
Another case, which is more recent — the Mail app has some problems after iPhone and iPad users updated to iOS 11. Apple and Microsoft ware working together to fix the problems, as you can read more from this MacRumor report.
Anyways, the solution to fix that Mail failing to quit error is also simple.
Simply click the Apple logo on the top left corner, then select Force Quit, highlight the Mail app, and confirm the operation. After that, your Mac should be able to shut down properly.
Another way to do this is open Activity Monitor (do a quick Spotlight search? to open the app), then select the Mail related process and quit it.
You can choose either way to get that done.

That’s for this update, I hope you find it useful. And hopefully Apple Mail team would improve the app and make it more smooth to use 🙂
Back up your library
Before following any of these steps, it's a good idea to create a backup of your photo library, even if you use iCloud Photos. You can use Time Machine, use a third-party backup solution, or copy the library to an external drive. By default, your photo library is stored in the Pictures folder within your home folder.
Make sure that your software is up to date

You might see an alert message when you first open Photos or migrate an existing iPhoto or Aperture library. Learn what to do if Photos can’t copy or create a library.
If the Media Browser isn't showing your photos and videos
Use the Media Browser to make images from your photo library available in other apps, like Pages and iMovie. The Media Browser shows only the contents of the Photos library designated as the System Photo Library. If you have more than one Photos library—and the one you're using isn't set as the System Photo Library—the Media Browser won't show its contents.
Follow these steps to designate the current library as the System Photo Library:
- Choose Photos > Preferences.
- Click the General button at the top of the Preferences window.
- Click Use as System Photo Library.
